Our Best Portrait Tips and Tricks!

INFANTS:

For your infant to have a truly newborn look consider photographing them during the first two weeks after birth. Remember, it’s best to moisturize your baby’s skin before the shoot for their best complexion. Diapers are ok! They are babies! Be aware of clothing that will constrict the skin and leave marks.

Newborn to 5 months - Since your baby is not able to sit up yet, candid portraits work best. Your baby may be smiling, or not smiling, or even sleeping! All three are precious. This is a good time to consider a Mother/Baby Portrait!

Ages 6 months to 1 year - Babies at this age are normally able to sit up, and will respond well with smiles. Babies 6-9 months should be able to sit or stand holding onto something. One-year-olds can usually stand and a variety of poses can be photographed.

Ages 1-3 years - Your child is walking and running, and likes to be independent, making the session much more challenging! It’s a good idea to bring some objects the child likes to play with to possibly include in the portrait.

Ages 4 and Up - Your child is verbalizing well by now, and may be shy with strangers. It helps us if you can give an idea of what your child is interested in. Don’t about your child smiling perfectly. It’s more important to capture natural expressions because you will remember them that way.

CHILDREN:

Watch out for bad clothes! Logos, stripes, and distracting patterns will not make for good memories. Seasonal options are appropriate – think beachwear or holiday clothes.

If you have more than one child, consider coordinate their clothes, remembering that color and style should be similar from head to toe. A little bit of lotion on the face and lip balm on the lips makes a significant difference in close up face shots. For the best photos, parents should clean their child’s face, eyes, nose, and lips prior to the session. You don’t want boogers as part of your photo!

FAMILY:

Try to maintain an over all look for clothes so everyone matches. Solid colors within the same color family are most appropriate for photographs with two or more people, when trying to convey a sense of unity. If each subject wears something with completely different it becomes distracting.

IDEAS TO CONSIDER:

- All Black or Black tops and Khaki or Denim bottoms.

- White tops with Khaki or Denim bottoms.

- Shades of Tans, Browns and Creams.

- All White from head to toe with bare feet.

- Holiday wear is also appropriate (Ex: red and green for Christmas)

GRADUATES:

Graduation is a special time. Let your graduate know they can express themselves with an outfit they choose, however remind them that their parent wants a photo just for them. Solid colored clothes will provide the best cleanest look. Avoid clothes with words no matter what! They won’t photograph well.

FOR EVERYONE:

Please try to avoid changing your hairstyle or cutting your hair just before your photo session. Let it be natural.

-

PROPS! Bring them along to make the photo specific to you. Do you play sports or a musical instrument? How about your surfboard, skateboard, or your child’s favorite toy?

BUSINESS HEADSHOTS:

Your portrait will define how people perceive you when it comes to business. Artistic? Conservative? Friendly? Unsure? Professional wear is always a good choice. If you choose to wear a suit, be sure to have it dry cleaned before the session. Men: Splashes of color in your tie are a sure hit! Women: Choose appropriate make-up to match your attire and remember to bring jewelry that also matches your style.
